HNA Group’s subsidiary Beijing Capital Airlines will begin 3X-weekly Hangzhou-Beijing-Lisbon (Portugal) services July 25, as part of its international expansion plans. The carrier will operate the new service using an Airbus A330-200.

Last year, the number of Chinese citizens who traveled to Portugal rose 19% to 183,000.

Capital Airlines is a joint venture established in 2010 by the HNA Group and the Beijing municipal government. The airline operates 72 aircraft, comprising eight A330 family aircraft and 64 A319s/A320s.

In addition to Beijing, Capital Airlines has nine overnight operating bases, including Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Sanya, Haikou, Xi’an, Lijiang, Shenyang, Nanjing and Qingdao. Since 2014, the carrier has opened more than 40 international routes from Hangzhou, Qingdao and Beijing to Southeast Asia, Europe and North America.

“The new service will be our first ‘capital to capital’ international service and we will open more ‘capital to capital’ services in the coming days,” Capital Airlines’ president Xu Jun said.

The carrier also plans to open more than 30 international services from Beijing’s new airport, which is scheduled to open in 2019.
