SkyTeam member Alitalia and Star Alliance carrier Avianca Brasil and have entered into a wide-ranging codeshare, with effect from July 3.

Under the agreement, Alitalia will place its AZ code on 21 of Avianca Brasil’s domestic routes and one international service from São Paulo Guarulhos and Rio de Janeiro.

The destinations include Brasilia, Cuiabá, Campo Grande, Belem, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Foz do Iguaçu, Goiânia, João Pessoa, Maceió, Natal, Navegantes, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, São Paulo, Vitória and Santiago de Chile (Chile).

Alitalia recently increased its Italy-Brazil frequencies to 18X-weekly, comprising 11 Rome Fiumicino-São Paulo Guarulhos frequencies and 7X-weekly on Rome-Rio de Janeiro.

Avianca Brasil is a important partner for Alitalia, as Brazil has a significant Italian community, said Alitalia strategy and operations chief Massimo Iraci. “Alitalia is going ahead with its strategy to develop commercial agreements with major international airlines…especially in those markets which present great growth opportunities for the airline.”

“This news is part of our strategy to offer opportunities for connecting Brazil and the world through partnerships,” Avianca Brasil president Frederico Pedreira said, adding that his company is expanding and will continue to evaluate other opportunities.

Avianca Brasil operates a fleet of 55 Airbus A320-family aircraft to 25 domestic and four international destinations, with 282 daily departures.
